Une recherche approfondie et inédite a permis de retrouver la trace de plusieurs autres toiles, de bâtir une biographie de cet élève de David d’abord peintre de sujets religieux avant de devenir portraitiste à l’île Bourbon, d’analyser ses tableaux et d’évoquer la vie artistique dans la colonie au milieu du XIXe siècle. Until now, the painter Alphonse Garreau has been completely neglected. The public only knew his allegory of the abolition of slavery painted in 1849 and two portraits that could be seen in a museum on Reunion Island. Extensive novel research made it possible to trace several other paintings by Garreau, to elaborate a tentative biography of this pupil of David who first painted religious subjects before becoming a portrait painter on Bourbon Island, to analyze his work and to evoke artistic life in the colony in the midst of the 19th century.
