Quoiqu’il ait été élevé à la dignité de Compagnon de la Libération (le plus rare et prestigieux des titres militaires) son action n’eut en réalité aucun impact sur le déroulement des évènements dans l’île. Son importance est peut-être à chercher ailleurs, dans la volonté pour De Gaulle d’affirmer la légitimité de la France combattante et d’asseoir le mythe de l’insurrection nationale. Raymond Decugis, a high-ranking civil servant under the Vichy regime will posthumously be covered with honours for being the only victim to have been killed when Reunion Island joined Free France on November 28 1942. The circumstances of his joining the movement and of his death remain unclear to this day. Although he was promoted “Compagnon de la Liberation”, the rarest and most prestigious french military distinction, his actions had actually no impact on the events that took place in the island. The significance of his action may lie elsewhere, namely in General De Gaulle’s desire to assert the legitimacy of fighting France and to sit the myth of the french national uprising.
