La proposition pédagogique est conforme aux instructions officielles des programmes d’histoire et de géographie du début du XXe siècle insistant sur la nécessité d’ancrer les discours disciplinaires sur les ressources du milieu local. Entre cette date et la fin des années 1920, Paul Hermann multiplie les éditions de son manuel, publie un nouvel ouvrage destiné aux élèves du cours élémentaire et surtout il conçoit et réalise une carte murale de La Réunion totalement inédite dans le contexte pédagogique local. Cette contribution tente de retracer les épistémologies scientifiques (en situation coloniale) qui fondent la géo-graphie de Paul Hermann. In 1909, schoolchildren in Réunion Island had access to the first history and geography textbook of the island, written by Paul Hermann, a teacher born in Saint-Pierre who trained at the École normale of Saint-Denis. Its pedagogical proposal followed France’s official instructions of history and geography programs of the early twentieth century, which asserted the need to anchor a disciplinary discourse on the resources of the local milieu. Between this date and the end of the 1920s, Paul Hermann produced several new editions of his textbook, published a book intended for elementary school pupils, and, most importantly, designed and constructed a wall map of Réunion Island that was groundbreaking for the local educational setting. The contribution at hand aims to outline (in a colonial context) the various scientific epistemologies which have shaped Paul Hermann’s geo-graphy.
