Mais au début du XXe siècle, le modèle agricole de l’île, de plus en plus dépendant de la recherche agronomique, se détourne de l’acclimatation. Dans le même temps, l’école élémentaire et technique qui se structure sous la IIIe République échoue à intégrer dans ses programmes cet enseignement. Progressivement, le jardin botanique de Saint-Denis perd sa fonction scientifique pour ne conserver que sa vocation de jardin d’agrément pour les visiteurs de passage. Throughout the 18th century, colonial authorities and local botanists encouraged and organized the introduction of new plants in Bourbon (Reunion Island). Locally organized in learned societies they attempted to assemble and spread practical knowledge linked to acclimatization of plants in order to develop the prosperity of the colony. But at the beginning of the twentieth century, the island’s agricultural model, which grew increasingly dependent on agronomy, shifted away from acclimatization. Consequently, the elementary scholar system organized by the 3rd French Republic failed to teach acclimatization. Moreover, the botanical garden of Saint-Denis losed its scientific function and remained a place of entertainment for visitors.
