Quelques mois plus tard, il décroche un Oscar à Hollywood et démarre une carrière internationale remarquée. Aujourd’hui, il reste un film de référence sur la critique du militarisme et du colonialisme. Cet article envisage les tenants et aboutissants de ce singulier parcours et propose d’aborder avec des élèves et des étudiants des aspects de l’historicité des représentations qu’il met en œuvre. Despite a good critical reception of Black and White in colour (1976), the first feature film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, about an episode of the First World War in Africa, the film is coldly received by the French public. A few months later, it won an Oscar in Hollywood and launched a remarkable international career. Today, it remains a landmark film on the critique of militarism and colonialism. This article considers the ins and outs of this singular path and proposes to discuss with pupils and students aspects of the historicity of the representations it brings into play.
