The still recent development of preventive archaeology in Mayotte has led to several interventions on the rock of Dzaoudzi, the course of human occupation of which was only perceptible in oral traditions. These interventions have made it possible to discover remains dating back to the 13th century and a continuity of occupation until the sultans of the Tsingoni decided to settle on the rock to make it their capital, which would then become the seat of colonial power in 1841.

Although Bara people are occupying the interior area of southern Madagascar, their history is also related to the sea. This might have stemmed from the fact that Bara ancestors came from overseas. According to oral tradition, embouchures played an important role in their arrival in the island. They would have landed in the southeastern or western coast of Madagascar before the 16th-17th century.

More than 3,000 narratives are analyzed to study the historical consciousness of Caledonian and Ni-Vanuatu students. The colonial period is very important in the narratives and reveals that it plays a predominant role in the way students construct, structure and analyze the relations between past, present and future. Moreover, the way colonization is described shows the persistence of a colonial point of view which interferes with the understanding students may have of this period. Finally, if Caledonian and Ni-Vanuatu students focus on the colonial period to tell their country history, they mobilize it in very different ways. In Vanuatu, in a teleological approach, the colonial period is a step towards independence while in New Caledonia, colonization divides students, especially when they come to question the relationship with France in an ongoing decolonization process.
