Il s’agit pour l’essentiel à La Réunion du patrimoine sucrier qui a forgé « l’identité sucrière de l’île ». Exclu de la mémoire, la valorisation de ce patrimoine aurait le mérite de transformer les touristes en « touristes affinitaires » d’une île où l’industrie s’est construite dans la défense des droits de l’homme. Mais le site industriel isolé a plus de difficultés pour attirer les visiteurs que s’il est inséré dans une « route touristique à thème », la « Route du Sucre ». Le long d’un trajet à suivre ou d’un « circuit », cette « route du sucre » articulerait les aspects techniques, politiques et sociaux liés au sucre mais établirait aussi un système de relations entre des patrimoines de même nature, autour de la découverte du thème simple de l’industrie en espace colonial. Il revient à l’historien de produire un discours d’identification, d’analyse et de commémoration. Touristic space of Reunion Island, saturated by the celebration of intangible heritage, has to be more open to the recognition of an unexpected industrial heritage in such tropical latitudes. That industrial heritage is mainly sugar heritage which built “sugar identity” of Reunion Island. Recognition of that forgotten heritage would have the advantage to make “family & friend” tourists with common tourists of an island where industry grow up by promoting human rights. Nevertheless, a remote industrial site will less easily attract tourists than a site linked in a tourist road, “Reunion Sugar Road” (RSR). Alongside “Sugar track”, that RSR would articulate technical, political and social aspects which depend on sugar question, and would establish a system of relationships between similar heritages, around the discovery of industrial issue in colonial spaces.
