Classées à l’inventaire des monuments historique en 1996, ces toiles sont restaurées en 2013 sous le nom de « Fonds Ménardeau ». Cet artiste, déjà familier de la colonie où il séjourne dès 1932, a laissé un important patrimoine pictural sous la forme de dessins, d’aquarelles et de peintures à l’huile. Il est membre de la Société Coloniale des Artistes Français chargée de la promotion artistique de la plus grande France. À La Réunion, Ménardeau peint surtout des paysages, des aquarelles, des croquis et, pour l’Hôtel de Ville, une fresque historique de l’arrivée de Mahé de la Bourdonnais à Saint-Denis en 1735. Son travail laisse un témoignage de cette lointaine colonie française durant l’entre-deux-guerres, loin de toute complaisance exotique. In 1935, the Town Hall of Saint-Denis in Reunion Island placed an order of 13 paintings (oil on canvas) to the painter of the French Navy Maurice Ménardeau (1897-1977). These paintings, now known as Fonds Ménardeau, have been listed in 1996 by the French Historic Monument Society and duly restored in 2013. Member of the Colonial Society of French Artists devoted to the promotion of the plus Grande France, this artist already knew the island since 1932. He left a significant number of paintings, watercolors, drawings and an historical painting retracing the arrival of Mahé de la Bourdonnais in Saint-Denis in 1735.
