Since 2011, glass furniture has been examined as part of preventive and planned archaeological excavations in the Antilles Islands, French Guyana and the Indian Ocean Islands. At the same time, a research program was launched in 2022 on Reunion Island to study the glass artifacts discovered on the island since 2012 and understand their use, their origin, their age in order to help interpret the occupations. This research raises the hypothesis of a new name for glass: agro-industrial glass linked to distilleries, in a colonial plantation economy from the 17th to the 20th century.

Although Bara people are occupying the interior area of southern Madagascar, their history is also related to the sea. This might have stemmed from the fact that Bara ancestors came from overseas. According to oral tradition, embouchures played an important role in their arrival in the island. They would have landed in the southeastern or western coast of Madagascar before the 16th-17th century.

Echoing from what has been said about Malagasy origins, the author examines the various hypotheses, without neglecting the mythistories, explains them in terms of ideological, political and scientific conditions in which they were conceived, and establishes what can be scientifically said today. Apart from any social Darwinism and physical anthropology, it illuminates the causes of migration, geographic origins and history of the Indian Ocean and also of the process in which is based the cultural unity of Malagasy people.

Four groups of Antandroys leave Madagascar between 1922 and 1927 in order to give enlisted workers to Reunion Island. This situation is paradoxical because Madagascar doesn’t have enough workers, but the need is important on Reunion Island, which seeks lower cost workers engaged. The confrontation between the two colonies requires the arbitration of French Colonies’ Office. The negociations and the arguments of Reunion Island reveal a engaged workforce which are connected with the re-establishment of a form of a human trade.

In Madagascar, nuclear households are becoming in Madagascar the prevailing pattern to the detriment of large households. However, family structures and their evolutions remain not well known and in the context of family breakdown (in case of parental separation or death) childcare patterns stay an area of major concern. Using a methodology developed by Christine Tichit, data from Demographic and Health Surveys (2003 and 2008) allow us to produce a typology of the main nucleus and a typology of secondary nucleus inside the household. Household typology can be inferred from them. Then we analyze residency options for children, and child care intra-family strategies in case of breakdown. Results show that children in single-parent nucleus live more often with their mother, whatever their father’s survival status. Precariousness of blended as of one-parent nucleus lead grand-parent to play a growing role in child care. More than 60% of foster children are cared by their grand-parents. Beyond a trend of household nuclearization, we have shown the family solidarity to face family breakdown crisis. This social cohesion is greater in Toliara and Fianarantsoa region, where family fosterage is more prevalent. Regional differences in child residency options show yet that several family answers coexist in Malagasy society. Further qualitative studies are needed to better understand challenges around family child care.

Throughout the 1930’s and 1940’s, a pharmaceutical laboratory settled in “le Havre” manufactured a kind of medicinal aperitif wine called Vin de Frileuse, made from uvaria seeds harvested in Madagascar. Through advertising highlighting the benefits of this invigorating drink, it is possible to identify on one hand, the acculturation process of nature called “savage” from the colonized territories, and, on the other, the opposition that is made by the colonial image between the colonizer and the colonized society.

The postage stamp is a means of knowing the image which the French state wants to give of its colonies. What happens for Madagascar and Reunion Island? The representation is traditional for Madagascar, with the will to underline the French domination. For Reunion Island, the elements are more confusing. The island is represented neither as an ordinary colony, nor like France, not even like the other old colonies.

Around 1900, in Reunion Island is launched a new labor quest. At that time, Madagascar is caught between two major opponents : Gallieni and its ambitious projects for his conquest and the Reunion’s planters that claim their rights on the big island. Our study of labor recruiter Henri Stielwill allow us to get the mechanism and the cynicism involved in the commitment existing between Madagascar and La Reunion Island. Also it will point out the misery of this labor left in the hands of greedy recruiters seeking for higher incomes and therefore ready to break the law.

During the military interventions of 1942 and 1947-1948 in Madagascar, the combat troops caused damages on movable assets and real estates of natural and legal persons. Following legal provisions, the Office of the High Commissioner compiled notification files and calculated the compensations to allocate to each victim. FRANOM 41 HCM takes advantage of these files to depict the colonial society during the malagasy inter-war period and sheds light on the events that occurred in 1947. Altogether, they constitute an important source of information for researches in social, economic and political history.

The colonial and indigenous population distrusted these men who had been profoundly transformed by the experience of war and their stay in Europe or the Mediterranean. Weakened, the colonial order opted to exclude these individuals, often limiting their visibility in the public space as much as possible.
