Faut-il y voir une étape décisive dans la réalisation de l’idéal maçonnique d’universalisme et d’égalité, ou bien faut-il y voir avant tout une concession, un compromis vis-à-vis de ce même idéal ? Au regard du contexte particulièrement critique, entre adossement accru des loges aux structures du pouvoir colonial et ouverture grandissante à la participation des populations indiennes, cet article se fixe pour ambition de questionner la capacité de la franc-maçonnerie à s’affranchir des hiérarchies coloniales rigides de la société coloniale britannique en Inde. In 1843, a new type of masonic lodge was founded in Bombay. The unprecedented feature of lodge Rising Star of Western India No. 342 was that it was open only to the "native gentlemen of proven character and respectability". The first "indigenous" lodge was born. How should we view the creation of so-called "indigenous" lodges in India? Should they be seen as a decisive step in the realization of the Masonic ideal of universalism and equality, or should they be seen above all as a concession, a form of compromise to that same ideal? In view of the particularly critical context, with lodges increasingly tied to colonial power structures and increasingly open to the participation of Indian populations, this article sets out to question Freemasonry’s ability to free itself from the rigid colonial hierarchies of British colonial society in India. Dans cette enclave portuaire et militaire de l’Extrême-Nord de Madagascar, l’atelier apparaît jusqu’en 1940 comme un lieu de sociabilité coloniale parmi d’autres. Les rares archives que nous en conservons établissent d’ailleurs sa place périphérique dans le paysage maçonnique malgache et indianocéanique. Pourtant, analysés au prisme de l’histoire de la ville, ces documents permettent également de mettre au jour les ambitions plurielles et affirmées des fondateurs de la loge. Dès lors, la trajectoire modeste de L’Action Républicaine illustre de manière sous-jacente les paradoxes de la franc-maçonnerie en situation coloniale. In this port and military enclave of the Far North of Madagascar, the workshop appeared until 1940 as a place of colonial sociability among others. The rare archives that we keep establish its peripheral place in the Malagasy and Indianocean Masonic landscape. However, analyzed through the prism of the city’s history, these documents also reveal the diverse and assertive ambitions of the lodge’s founders. Hence, the modest trajectory of Republican Action illustrates the underlying paradoxes of Freemasonry in a colonial situation.
